To save his family from starvation, Stannis of Barony Jazinsk makes the ultimate sacrifice selling himself into slavery. When he's sold to an envoy from neighboring Barony Deterikh, he's thrust into the middle of a feud twenty years in the making. Rumors of dark alchemy and hints of betrayal threaten to break the fragile peace between the baronies, and Stannis' arrival at the court may be the blow that shatters it. With war drums beating on the horizon, can a lowly pleasure-slave persuade his new owner into preserving the peace?

I fell into this book with an expectation that it would be a quick read with some fetishes thrown in to keep things interesting. But the more I delved into it the more I enjoyed the book. Don't get me wrong this title certainly isn't for everyone. However if you like to explore a scandalous tale about slavery, alchemy, and betrayal then I highly recommend it.Key takeaways:
The bad
- The main plot isn't particularly deep and I would have loved to learn more about Stannis' past.
The good
- The author writes beautifully and poetically, especially in their descriptions.
- The subject matter takes risks and rewards the reader for sticking through.
- The plot has twists and turns that continue to surprise even on a second read.
- The characters grow and learn from one another in a rich and fascinating setting.
- The ending is thorough, resolving most conflicts and wrapping things up wonderfully.

Bonds of Silver Bonds of Gold edition by Kristina Tracer Jessie Tracer Tubine Divinity Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A young baron with a scandalous past is threatened by the machinations of his aunt to push his country into war. Her secret weapon is a slave altered in physical form and mental state by magic, whose attentions will push the sexually frustrated baron into headstrong mistakes leading to his downfall. However, it is the love for this same slave that drives the baron and his most trusted friend in the military to rally against her and retake their land. Kristina Tracer's "Bonds of Silver, Bonds of Gold" uses this story as a framework for an extended hypnosis-transformation scene that focuses on the slave, Stannis; an odd choice since the main character arc occurs to the baron Erik Deterikh. The novel flirts with "A Game of Thrones" politics but doesn't have the stomach for that, thank goodness. It remains a charming romp through an intriguing mind-control dominance/submission play session.
A poor farmer, Stannis, sells himself into slavery to feed his brothers and sisters in Barony Jazinsk whose famine was engineered by the neighboring Barony Deterikh. In the first superfluous third of the novel, Stannis is sold to a number of masters before having his genitals augmented by the sage Aura, and he is presented to Erik as a gift. Erik and his friend Valentin use and love Stannis (renamed "Tanneh" in a "Sen to Chihiro" fashion) in scenes following the style and teenage logic of shonen manga. Erik and Valentin are uncomfortable in their respective roles, and take inspiration from Tanneh who is devoted to his. The events and character arcs often occur more in service of certain key events happening than to present a tale with natural flow, including scenes of abuse too easily forgiven. However, Erik, Valentin, and Tanneh reflect the confusion of finding identities throughout teenage years, and bond against the arbitrary insanities of perceived adulthood. Tanneh is Nick Carraway to Erik's Gatsby, but grows to be much more by the end.
However, Tanneh is not so much a character as a state during a hypnosis scene. His waking personality drifts in and out, experiencing the separation of awareness and conscious action performed outside of his control but not consent. He relishes the focuses of owning and ownership. He doesn't have much that is interesting about him outside the state - a talent for music is dropped as soon as his body is altered such that he cannot handle an instrument. The love and power dynamics among the trio are far more grounded than the characters themselves.
Tracer's strength is also her attention to detail. "Weeds crawled through the furrows of peas and squash, and the kale was beginning to brown and wilt. The rain-barrel beside the door was half-full, and a few soggy leaves floated in the water inside." Barony Jazinsk and Deterikh remain nebulous, but every door and farm that Tanneh encounters is warm, rich, and detailed. Clever wordplay spices up the text. As well, the ending ties up the plot elements in a genuine and heartfelt manner. Its discussion on the strength of the fluidity of power dynamics is pat, but it is more respectful of the participants involved than similar fiction such as Antoniou's "The Master".
Tracer should be commended for presenting such sex-positive genderqueer fiction written without the leer or titillation of heteronormative assumptions.
If you don't have an inclination towards any of these subjects, this isn't the book to turn you onto them. This is an exciting, manga-style tale of fragile, malleable psyches, and a reminder that it is okay to play with who you are, no matter what anyone else wants of you.
I fell into this book with an expectation that it would be a quick read with some fetishes thrown in to keep things interesting. But the more I delved into it the more I enjoyed the book.
