April Glaser had a seemingly perfect life; one of financial security, education, social status, and physical beauty. By age thirteen she began a successful career in modeling, at seventeen she became a professional cheerleader for the Denver Broncos and by twenty-one she received her BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. April lived a life that many people dream about. She had everything anyone could hope for. Until one day, she simply walked away from it all in order to see what else existed in the world. She put all of her belongings in storage, packed up one single suitcase, said good-bye to friends and family, and set off to Asia. April traveled solo for a half a year, during which time she met people, saw sights and experienced things that she never imagined possible. Learning to Fly is about the month April spent in Cambodia volunteering at an orphanage, where for the first time in her life she was faced with unhindered poverty, injustice, disease and human suffering. With complete honesty and uncensored humility, this compelling true story sheds light on the way life is lived on the opposite side of the world. It allows the reader to acknowledge the truth of another culture and to welcome in a different perspective on life.

This was a very enjoyable trip, to a part of the world I may never visit. April describes her adventures in such a way, as to make you a part of the events, as they unfold. I felt the presents of the children, in her classroom eager to learn, as well as the children in the trash dump, grateful for a meal. I enjoy the colorful style with which she writes describing her personal feelings, the sadness and the joys she experienced on this journey of personal growth. This book was,"Time out of mind" well spent.Product details

Learning to Fly A Journey Through Cambodia and Life April Glaser Cynthia Pasquale Jeanet Chavez Trevor Tierney 9781456334277 Books Reviews
While embarking on a journey of self-exploration, April so selflessly and admirably gave herself to the people of Cambodia. Her writing style makes you feel like you are right there with her on her journey, seeing what she saw and feeling what she felt. She is both candid and eloquently descriptive about herself and all that she experienced on her trip to Cambodia. I smiled and cried, but came away with such a deep respect for April and the people whose lives she has touched.
This book was a beautiful and enlightening read! This young author's writing style is very visual and captivating. No matter what is going on in your life, I think any reader can closely identify with topics addressed during April's personal journey. The story is told is such a manner, I could see, taste, smell, and feel her experiences. The best part for me was that the events and personal accounts were truly authentic and honest. Many chapters brought me to tears, and made me question the intricate workings of the human condition. I walked away truly inspired.
The author made you feel like you were with her on her extrodinary journey! She touched the lives of many children during her outreach stay in that Cambodian orphange and she touched mine as well. I could invision the blessed little souls that she worked with and shared her joy and her sadness. Her writing style is witty, loving and descriptive. Young and old alike will grow from the experience of her giving from the heart. This book will take you to a place you have never been before, and make you want to extend yourself to the boys and girls of this abandoned country. A must read!
